dimwitted creation of science

Hello there! I'm Emmalyn, but I also go by Emma. I love making all sorts of things.

This is my main blog, and is occasionally NSFW. Current obsessions include OUAT, Mass Effect, Megamind, Portal, Homestuck, cosplaying, feminism, gender issues, and other topics.

Also, this is a safe, sex-positive, and LGBTQ-/trans*-friendly space. Feel free to make yourself at home, and do send me an ask if you want to share something (or if you just want to ask me about my ships). ;D

But ask yourself: Why is there that knee-jerk rejection of any effort to “overthink” pop culture? Why would you ever be afraid that looking too hard at something will ruin it? If the government built a huge, mysterious device in the middle of your town and immediately surrounded it with a fence that said, “NOTHING TO SEE HERE!” I’m pretty damned sure you wouldn’t rest until you knew what the hell that was — the fact that they don’t want you to know means it can’t be good.

Well, when any idea in your brain defends itself with “Just relax! Don’t look too close!” you should immediately be just as suspicious. It usually means something ugly is hiding there.

    ”

E - Have you added anything stupid/cracky/hilarious to a fandom; if so, what?

Well, I didn’t add these by myself, but I helped inspire a couple of hilarious Megamind crossovers by Maddy and Dal. :D

M - Your favorite fanart or fanartist

Aw man, that’s as hard as asking my favorite author! I know so many talented artists that I can’t even begin to sort through them all. So I think I’ll cop out and just link to my deviantArt favorites. (Sorry!)

    A - Your current OTP

I have lots! But I’ll mention two that I neglected in my last post: ChellDOS (Chell and GLaDOS, from Portal), and Megamind/Roxanne.

L - Your favorite fanartist/author gives you one request, what do you ask for

    Answered here!

Y - A fandom you’re in but have no ships from

I…literally cannot think of a single fandom for this. I’ve been shipping since before I can remember having any level of attraction for another human being (I’m talking, like, age 4). I never really thought of it that way before.

N - Your favorite fanfiction or fanauthor

  • You didn’t specify a fandom, so I’ll just choose randomly based on what I’m thinking about! (which right now likely means angsting about OUAT and Mass Effect, just as a warning…)

    —-

C - A pairing you have never liked and probably never will

Captain Swan (Hook and Emma Swan), from OUAT. He’s too slimy and deceptive to be likable. Pitiable, yes, but not likable.

D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t

Red Beauty (Ruby/Red and Belle), also from OUAT. At this point, anything I’d’ve liked about them being friends has been crushed, CRUSHED I TELL YOU. Especially when Ruby outright lied to her and then sat by and let that horrible orderly drug Belle again instead of stopping her from hurting her friend—okay I have to stop before I rant for 20 minutes. XD

I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms; if so, which and why?

Yeah, kinda…the MLP fandom is what I’m thinking about with this one. Mostly because people are more free with their emotions (and therefore with bigotry) on the internet, and because Tumblr lets a person meet/hear about many more people than in-person groups do. As a result, a few douchebags (and many of their supporters) have made me want to avoid the MLP fandom in general. But I still follow many fans of the show, because they are sweet and awesome peeps. c:

L - Your favorite fanartist/author gives you one request, what do you ask for?

This may sound self-centered, but…probably a portrait of me and/or my friends, like this one! I just really love seeing what other people think we’d look like in their style. (If it’s not a commission, I’m more likely to ask for a picture of an OTP or fandom-related thing, because then the artist can share their work with a wider audience. :D)

N - Your favorite fanfiction or fanauthor

THAT’S NOT FAIR— Okay, I’ll just pick some random ones because I can’t choose between all my lovelies, so please don’t be offended if you’re not on this list. My brain is not the best at remembering. XD So. Here’s a random list (rearranged to be alphabetical since I can’t choose just one fave): conquerorwurm, Dal Niente, Dani Kin, Hunger4righteousness, Memlu (The Croc Shop), MomoOfficial, Nym, quondam, rufeepeach, servantofclio, Scarlet-Frost, tarysande, Vaniterra, wafflestories, writetherest…(+ lots more)

R - A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships

Samantha Traynor and Tali, from Mass Effect. They’d be so cute and shy and nerdy with each other, plus they both have cute accents. What’s not to love???

    X - 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms

    These aren’t exclusive; I’m a huge multi-shipper!

OUAT: Swan Queen (Regina/Emma; tied with Rumbelle, Rumpel/Belle, and Sleeping Warrior, Mulan/Aurora).

    Mass Effect: Shakarian (Shepard/Garrus)

    Adventure Time: Bubbline (Princess Bubblegum/Marceline)

Ignoring the obvious issue here, that this is a completely unprofessional way to treat someone who’s part of your consumer-base, I gave this some thought last night. There are dozens of ways that Megamind would have been marketable that for some reason were overlooked.
Minion bath toys - wind him up and watch him ‘swim’! This don’t even have to be accurate to movie size so long as they’re accurate to movie appearance.
More comic books, and ones that are more readily available. I looked everywhere up here in Washington to find the comics after I heard they existed and they weren’t even in the discount bins at Comic Stop.
Making the art book more readily available! Same issue as above at Barnes and Noble. I went over that store twice in every possible section the art book could be shelved and ended up having to mail order it.
Licensed clothing! Lightning bolt beanies, shirts, and socks, and shoes with the Baby Sealz logo on the sole!
Plush versions of Minion, baby Megamind, and baby Metro Man. Huggable, saleable to the younger crowd, and easily collectable. Some fans are already working on this on their own time (and the plushies are adorable!), so you can see that there is consumer demand for it.
Silk-screen printed pillows with scenes from the movie, or official art! You see this all the time with anime merch, why not with Megamind?
More posters! I’ve only seen two different designs available (and this is likely my lack of searching) and one of them was missing his signature goatee.
Better molded Brainbot toys. You could make them miniature, like the McDonald’s ones, or you could make them RC capable and about the size of a helicopter toy. I know I’d buy one of those!
Wall-scrolls. Again, you see this a lot with anime merchandise, and it ties into the idea of more posters.
For that matter, an ‘air swimmer’ version of Minion. There are examples here if you haven’t seen one of those before.
Megamind trading card games.
Megamind school supplies! Folders, notebooks, lunchboxes, etc etc.
Metro Man action figures! I’m sure most of us are familiar with the ‘pec flexing action’ dolls from Hercules, right? Some of those!
Roxanne Ritchi dolls, complete with several outfits, microphone, and news van! You could even make the extra outfits and news van sold separately, more money.
‘What if’ comics similar to the Futurama run of ‘Anthology of Interest’ episodes. What if Megamind had been able to use his Typhoon Cheese plan, or the robo-sheep?
Comics illustrating several key points in Megamind’s life - his very first battle with Metro Man, the first time he met/kidnapped Roxanne, his first escape, building Minion’s adult suit, building his first Brainbot…
Anthology versions of the comics! Collect everything that’s been drawn and released now into one volume and re-release it as a collector’s item.
Brainbot change wallets!
Above all, release these in more countries than just the U.S. Just from the fan community members that I know we have several members in Europe and South America.
This movie is incredibly easy to merchandise for. I’m not involved in the business side of things, so I have no clue how profitable any of these would be other than the certainty of your die-hard fans buying them. Hey, you don’t even have to take this seriously - I’m just a fan, after all, and judging by rainbowsqueeze’s message to Filthy, us fans of Megamind and your other abandoned works (the Prince of Egypt line of movies, Road to El Dorado, Sinbad, etc) are idiots.

This makes me sad. I’m not angry at DreamWorks for the failing of Megamind because, let’s face it: they wanted it to succeed and they’re the ones who payed the biggest price when it didn’t. But if rainbowsqueeze is a legitimate DreamWorks employee and not some sort of elaborate troll (something that I still have my doubts about, despite people’s insistence that she really works there) I really hope that her viewpoints don’t reflect those of the company in general. That Megamind failed because it wasn’t “marketable” enough. That the reason Rise of the Guardians isn’t doing well in the box office is due to the people who like the movie not supporting it enough. And that Filthy, who I’ve seen make more of an effort than anyone to promote this company’s works, deserves to be called an “idiot” for daring believing that good art can succeed if a company makes the right choices.

UGH this pisses me off. Not just the brush-off, but the NERVE of that insult! Seriously? You can’t think of any counter-arguments to a fan of YOUR COMPANY other than “wow you’re stupid”? (Which, apart from being blatantly untrue, is completely unprofessional and generally awful. You’d have to be a in a pretty low place to think that sending this kind of message was okay.) I repeat: UGH.
And I totally agree about the lack of merchandising. Even those of us who tried to seek out and buy toys, comics, etc., couldn’t find them for several of our favorite Dreamworks movies. That’s just strange.
